In honor of World Ocean Day 2022, Blue Scholars Initiative and ARTSail presented the second Annual World Ocean Weekend Celebration on June 11th and 12th at the newly renovated W South Beach. Designed to raise awareness on ocean conservation, the weekend program includes a fitness class on the sand, beach clean-up, art installations, inspiring conversations and films organized in collaboration with the SF-based International Ocean Film Festival.
The weekend kicked off Saturday morning, June 11, with fitness activities, including an ocean mile swim, yoga, Pilates and a paddle-out followed by a beach clean-up, educational community engagement activities, and concluded with special remarks by The City of Miami Beach Commissioner, David Richardson. The sands was lined with a impressive art installations by Miami-Beach based artist Beatriz Chachamovits, and California-based artist Maria Teresa Fernandez, paying tribute to the environment and our world ocean.
The Saturday evening hosted a ticketed fundraiser to celebrate three years of Blue Scholars’ achievements, connecting South Florida youth to Biscayne Bay and the marine ecosystem. Sunday evening closed out the weekend with inspiring conversations from the Sheroes of the Ocean series, and the second set of ocean films.

Three art projects were featured at the weekend event:
Art Flags: Florida Endangered Species, an installation conceived and designed by Beatriz Chachamovits to raise awareness of the threat to biodiversity in our own backyards. The artist selected six endemic species to South Florida that are currently on the Florida Endangered and Threatened Species Act: Seagrass, Kemp Ridley Sea Turtle, Hammerhead Shark, Manatee, Elkhorn Coral, and Pillar Coral.
Modeling the Reef, an interdisciplinary public outreach and art project designed to provide access to and awareness of ecological, social, and craft knowledge to youth from Miami public schools. During a series of workshops, artist Beatriz Chachamovits taught students the importance, and the plight of corals, and helped them craft their own ceramic coral sculptures. The students sculptures, along some created by the artist in her studio, come together to create this installation.
On the Horizon, by Ana Teresa Fernandez, a temporary installation on shorelines that connects communities to the sea and moves them to an empathic and proactive approach to address rising sea levels. This art installation creates a powerful experience inviting the audience into the narrative, making the abstract more tangible to help people understand the consequences of rising sea levels and the impact on their lives, their loved ones, and their community.
