Water Ecologies for our Shared Future is a publication that brings together organizations and individuals involved with art, history, science and activism to collaborate in the creation of a bilingual (English and Spanish) experimental book mixing fiction, scientific essay and speculative realism. The narration, built around fictional characters based on iconic specimen selected from South Florida flora and fauna, will address climate change scenarios and related water problematics, specific to the region.
Miami-based artist Christina Pettersson will provide the visual commentary to the text written by Blanca de la Torre, in collaboration with the non-profit Friends of the Everglades, the water-quality advocacy group VoteWater.org, and scientists from the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science at UM and Audubon Florida, to ensure scientific accuracy of the selected terms.
Miami-based Exile Book will assist with the book design, publishing and distribution; a book release event will be hosted by Books & Books in June 2023. The first print run will be of 200 copies, out of which 50 will be a limited collectors edition including an original print signed and dated by the artist.
