Sheroes of the Ocean
In 2020, stimulating talks began as ARTSail Conversations, then rapidly expanded into the Sheroes of the Ocean series, thereby illuminating truly remarkable narratives of women who play pivotal roles in ocean conservation. A cornerstone event at ARTSail’s annual flagship event, World Ocean Celebration – a collaboration with Blue Scholars Initiative commemorating World Ocean Day – Sheroes of the Ocean presents engaging discourses with audiences of all ages across Miami and beyond.
To date, a diverse selection of 23 amazing women from Japan to Estonia, Mexico, Russia, Brazil and the US, includes artists, cultural producers, marine biologists, environmentalists, oceanographers, and activists who have devoted their lives to comprehending, safeguarding, and preserving our oceans. Each compelling story not only captivating audiences, but underscoring the universal imperative of caring for our marine ecosystems.
Noteworthy Sheroes from our previous showcases include Brazilian artist Beatriz Chachamovits; Mexican artist Ana Teresa Fernandez; Japanese champion free diver and underwater photographer Ai Futaki; Estonian swimming champion and ocean activist Merle Liivand; Carlee Monique Jackson, Director of Communications and co-founder of Minorities in Shark Science; Dr. Nikki Traylor Knowles, Assistant Professor of Marine Biology and Ecology at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Miami; Dr. Lisa Beal, Professor of Oceanography in the Ocean Sciences department at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science; Karlisa Callwood, marine scientist educator, Nat Geo Explorer, fisheries expert; Anya Freeman, Founder and CEO, Kind Designs; Deborah Mitchell, conservation artist and Master Naturalist; Cyan Simmons, Ocean Conservancy Ports & Communities Liaison.
Our next venture involves an expansion of the platform. We are set to produce short films that delve into the lives of each Shero, accompanied by the establishment of a dedicated website and a robust social media presence. This initiative seeks to create a global network that not only supports and sustains the efforts of these Sheroes but also fosters mutual support among them. For this next phase, we are in conversation with a renowned filmmaker and photographer whose career has been dedicated to capturing the inspiring stories of trailblazers, visionaries, and change-makers worldwide.
